Bariatric surgery is increasingly seen as an effective and cost-effective treatment for obesity. There is even some evidence that it can reverse type 2 diabetes.
The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) have co-produced a guideline for bariatric surgery that includes within its scope, its use in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The guideline covers:
- Who should be offered bariatric surgery
- Which procedure should be offered
- Preoperative management
- Optimal posoperative care and follow-up.
The guideline is freely available on the AACE website, along with their other diabetes publications.
Comments
- We have not assessed the extent the guideline accords with AGREE criteria
- The long-term effect of bariatric surgery on remission rates of type 2 diabetes is currently not well studied
- The guideline is written from a US perspective.
